Tackling teenage pregnancy is central to the Government's work to prevent health inequalities, child poverty and social exclusion. Staffordshire is making positive strides to reduce unintended teenage conception rates. Programmes have been inter-linked with the reduction in health inequalities and social exclusion agenda. Since the onset of the County's teenage pregnancy strategy in 1999, many services are being improved to ensure children and young people have access and support at the point of need. This work necessitates the continued engagement of all partner agencies.
The Staffordshire Teenage Pregnancy Partnership continues to work towards:
- Ensuring that children and young people are not only brought up in a society where they are valued, but where opportunities are maximized and harm minimized.
- Reducing under 18 unintended conceptions in order to contribute to a reduction in health inequalities and therefore minimizing the risk of exclusion for teenage parents and their children.
- Ensuring that children and young people will have access to a range of coordinated, comprehensive services of high quality, which respond to differing needs in the local community
- Targeting services to specifically vulnerable groups and closing the gap in teenage conception rates at ward level.
- Ensuring young parents have access to education, training and employment
Tackling Teenage Pregnancy requires long-term commitment to a sustainable agenda. We will ensure that work currently being delivered is fully evaluated to ensure the sustainability and future development of services.
